Introducing the Sport Job Day

The Sport Job Day is a recruitment event for young adults, graduates and apprentices, with an active lifestyle and the desire to start a career in sports. On the 13th of June 2018, companies & young career interested come together in Stade Jean Bouin in Paris to connect and get to know each other.For the last decade, the sports sector has been one of the biggest growing employers in Europe, offering more than 200.000 jobs in France alone. A development resulting in the creation of entry positions for school & university graduates - and enough reason to dedicate a whole recruitment event to the sports sector alone. Not only will interested graduates have the chance to inform themselves about employment possibilities and professions, but directly participate in workshops & interviews with recruiters.

The programme

Similar to a job ferry, sports brands present themselves in set-up booths, giving insights into their work environment, as well as employment and training opportunities. Team members from Human Recources will be there to answer all your questions - and for you to gain valuable contacts.In 10 minute Speed Dating Interviews, applicants and companies immerse in an straight-to-the-point dialogue to learn more about each others character & qualities - a short, but effective way to figure out if it's a match.It's a place to learn: In conferences, professionals lecture about related topics, for example new professions in the sports sector or give advice on how to conquer the international sports job market. Participate actively in workshops with headhunters and recruiters to improve your future applications and interviews.

Sales & Marketing are a big part of every bigger company, they even decide on the success of a business. Because of that the sports industry offers plenty of careers in Sales and Marketing. However, even though they collaborate, the two are far away from being the same - or even one field. If you feel that your Sales experience is enough to work in Marketing or the other way round or you feel like „you are good in selling“, so either career should be fine - you better know what you actually apply for!Originally, Marketing developed in Sales, but turned to a new approach. In small companies one person often handles both - the reason is simply that, at first glimpse, both focus on clients and offer a possibility to increase Sales. But that’s a very superficial conclusion which doesn’t hold up to a conscious look. A big part of the sports industry trends to separate both departments for the biggest possible success. Here’s why:

The impact of Marketing and Sales in a Sports Company

In one of our earlier Blogs in 2013, we wrote that the „main subject of sport jobs in marketing is planning and execution of advertising-activities with the aim to sell products“. Wait, sounds like Sales after all! Well, we have to admit that this definition is a little outdated. Nevertheless, it’s an idea which is still stuck in many minds - something to get rid of to truly understand the varying characters of the two fields.Marketing is a strategical approach completely focused on the client. Through analysis, Marketing Manager define the peer group, its wants and needs. Understanding those helps the company to bend or turn to a direction which satisfies the segment long-term and thus, binding it to the brand. It might even define the complete identity and strategy of a company to fulfill the requirements (for products, the brand, customer service, logistics, communication, etc) of its clients continuously.Sales is a tactical approach completely focused on selling products. It’s the approach to convince clients on buying the existing products in stock to make the maximum profit. It focuses on the recent products and a turnover rate of maximum volume in a short-term. A good Sales employee needs to prove a client that the product is what will satisfy his needs - not the other way round.

One doesn’t work without the other

We said before that Sales is focused on the „now“, which is just a part of the truth. Of course, operational it is, strategically though, the department also works on the development of new clients and new markets - in the future. That’s where the two come together. You might even say that Sales are the result from good Marketing: It is responsible for providing necessary information and tools to help the turnover rate grow - by giving details on new ways to reach (new and more) customers, simply a Market Research.

Do I have to be sportive to apply for a sport job?

Sport jobs are currently high on demand: The fitness sector is booming and so new positions are frequently advertised. But a sport job, even when called this way, does not necessarily have to be physically demanding. Most of the offers at Sportyjob, for example, are actually in administative or creative departments.

So there's the question popping up: Do I have to be athletic to work in sports? A classic yes-but-no-situation.

Your own interests in sports decide how you do your work

Careers in online marketing, sponsoring management, sportswear designer or brand manager (...) are mainly office-based sport jobs. Truth be told: There's a lot of sitting involved - so you probably even like your little workout at the end of the day. Nevertheless, being athletic is not necessarily important to get hired or to do a good job. Here's the big BUT - You should still bring along some sport-affinity. The named careers all have one thing in common: You need to know what your peer group wants and needs. This means you should be able to put yourself into the position of an athlete and have detailed knowledge about the discipline your sport job is all about. Of course, being a big fan of it without executing can still give you a lot of expert knowledge, but the little details - that's something you figure out when you get active yourself.

You can choose to get active to do a better job

We learned that you don't have to challenge yourself, as long as you do an intensive examination of the regarding discipline. Anyway, the time you spend reading (or watching) about it would also be a great chance to actually try it instead. Through this active preoccupation with your the field of your sport job, you will probably end up way more motivated, creative and authentic. A product designer for snowboards will achieve no credibility if he doesn’t know how to ride snowboards.

The sports industry wants experts in their fields

The industry has a similar opinion on this. Often, you will find former professional athletes in the office careers of Red Bull Media, adidas & co. As they bring a huge amount of sport-specific knowledge along, they are also perfect contributors for business development (Sales, Product Development, Marketing - every department). Even though an event manager for sport competitions may not compete anymore, thanks to his experiences he will have the perfect concept for the event.No need to run the New York Marathon next year, but if you go running every couple of days, developing a communication plan for the social media channels of runtastic gets a lot easier, don't you think?

Calling passionate non-athletes: Please apply anyway

Don't feel the pressure to become a professional athlete now. Sports companies are looking for the same hard and soft skills as any other companies. So if you are not an active person, this doesn't mean you can't apply for a sport job. If you are intested in the company, the job and bring knowledge, skills or hidden talents, there's almost no employer who wouldn't like to get to know you. What we tried to make clear in this post, is that the only thing really essential for a job in the sports industry is passion. You see: the group of friends kicking a ball on the street, the boy playing a match every weekend with his amateur team, his family cheering on the side of the field, the soccer fan watching every single match of their favorite team live or on TV, Cristiano Ronaldo being a professional football player - they all have one thing in common. And that's the passion for a sports. A sport job you have no affinity for, no connection to or at least a relation on a mental level won’t be an ideal career for you.

It's easy to find a job you love, come on board!
How do you find a job that you love? While for some it may seem as easy as 1,2,3 for around 80% of the people it’s hard to figure out what their dream profession is. So it was for me and often enough I discovered myself feeling lost in my job. Especially sitting in an office where everybody seemed to have found their role (today I know it’s just that a lot of my co-workers never reflected on WHY they are doing their job. They didn’t find their role, they just never looked).It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that this is different in the sports sector: For many it is their dream being a part of their favorite brand, their sports club or being able to deal with their favorite sports every day. Sport enthusiasts are often driven by passion, by spirit! Once they made the step to be hired by a sports company, they stay and put their whole heart in it. Why? Because they love it.Of course, there is more to it than just being a sport addict. In the inspiring Ted Talk of Scott Dinsmore „How to find work you love“ he explains how to find a job that is meaningful and fulfilling. He broke it down to three steps which are based on learning about yourself and becoming a „self-expert“. Oh, and if you listen closely, you’ll see it’s mostly about figuring out what you care for - and then just do it.

Step One: Find your Unique Strengths

The first move to make is about finding your unique strengths. He doesn’t talk about the hard skills you learned in university, but about the things that you love doing. Things that other people recognize you for, ask you for advice on. Everyone has them.

Step Two: Figure out your Values

Values and morales are one of the great influences that make you who you are. No matter if you learned them through traditions and education or figured them out by your own experiences. They shape your character. Furthermore, it’s your values that influence every single decision you will ever make. These values are the treasures you have to keep. It can be hard, but grab ahold of them.

Step Three: Reflect on your Experiences

The third and last factor that shapes who you are. Experiences show you what to do or what to avoid. If you manage to reflect on every experience you make and stay open to new ones, you’ll figure out more about your own self every day. Every experience can be applied on your life, they make the fractions of your legend.

A new path will lead to new surroundings

With these steps accomplished, you’ll be able to identify yourself and the things that make you happy or that you burn for. Things you weren’t able to see before even if they were as subtle as a baseball in the face. What you’ll also notice when you are more self-aware is how people around you handle their career - and whether or not they live it to the fullest. 
As a result, you’ll see people differently and thus, surround yourself with other people. An important step! The best way to push your limits is to surround yourself with passionate people who inspire you. Or like Scott puts it:“You can either hang around the people who tell you it can't be done and tell you you're stupid for trying, or surround yourself with the people who inspire possibility.“
